Through the eyes of Sierra Leonean filmmakers, SURVIVORS presents a portrait of their country during the Ebola outbreak, exposing the complexity of the epidemic and the socio-political turmoil that lies in its wake. Drawing from deeply personal stories of Sierra Leonean heroes, the film explores how the epidemic not only ravaged families and communities, but also reveals broken infrastructures, entrenched political fissures and mounting tensions with roots in the decade-long Civil War. Our guide in this film is Arthur Pratt, a Sierra Leonean filmmaker. Arthur’s video diaries and coverage of the outbreak becomes a prism for understanding both the personal and the political significance of the health catastrophe. In this way, SURVIVORS profoundly wrestles with what it means to be Sierra Leonean at this critical juncture in the country’s history.
